Waite’s End

Last Monday afternoon, we left the hurly burly of Peaks Island for Waite’s End, our friend’s place on Androscoggin Lake in Wayne, Maine. Kathy’s father, Jack Mahoney, built his retirement home on family property that overlooks a cove on the northern tip of this grand lake. She has lovingly freshened up the house and gardens for seasonal rental, and we made a brief but heavenly visit before she departs for home.

We drove the hour and fifteen minutes from Portland under soggy skies that just barely cleared as we arrived.

What a delight to meet Phil, her daughter’s rescue greyhound. He is as sleek as a seal with the temperament of a sloth. My sketch doesn’t do his elegance justice.

The nearly full moon drew us outside, where the lonely trilling of loons echoed across the still waters.

Stories were told by the fire.

There are books and books and books. We found one to have some irresistible Book Face fun.

The oh so quiet night brought forth the most gorgeous of days. We ate breakfast while admiring these beauties from the garden.

There’s a short but magical stroll through shady woods to the dock. Daisy bailed out the kayaks while I began sketching.

She and Marty paddled off while I drew them.

They encountered a splashing trio of loons.

And then I got my turn!

Kathy joined us as Daisy tried the paddle board.

I’ve always wanted to try one. Here I am, wobbly but joyful.

Kathy’s the only one who swam. It’s been a cool June, and this was her first dip of the season. Invigorating!

Marty’s in a color harmony here.

Thank you, Kathy, for our sublime getaway! We will savor the delights of Waite’s End til next time.

This spot is perfect for privacy, relaxation, beauty, and the wonders of nature. Watch for beavers from binoculars on the deck, listen to loons calling, notice the heron who lands at the water’s edge, roam the bookshelves for lazy reading, gaze at dragonflies grazing the lake, and give your soul some rest. You deserve it!
