Merry Barn Makers

I’d been invited to visit the Merry Barn in Edgecomb, Maine during April vacation in 2020. Nope, the pandemic intervened. Instead I visited virtually last July during their Sense of Place Writing Adventure week. Last Tuesday I finally made a visit in person, and it was oh so worth the wait!

This old barn was given new life by founder, Stephanie Noyes McSherry, who greeted me upon arrival as I set up my show and tell. It’s every bit as welcoming inside as out. Old wood, fresh flowers, and creative clutter abound.

And there’s my collage I sent last year after my virtual visit!

The campers came in from recess, flushed and donning their masks. I told Maari I liked her t-shirt, because I’ve got story ideas about bioluminescent critters, and now I need to learn about railroad worms.

There are vehicles all over for writing and reading.

She’s got a massive collection of kids’ books, wow!

And quite a display of my books, too.

Julian was eager to show his dynamic drawings, swirling with action and drama.

I talked about using a storyboard, making dummies to rehearse my story arc, and always carrying a sketchbook and camera to record observations. I began my career as an illustrator and author much the same way as these young people: drawing and reading as much as possible. Sharp eyes, sharp pencils is my motto!

After a break for running outside, we drew together. Each camper selected from my stash of small nature objects.

Drawing from life requires careful looking and focus, and the campers’ concentration was evident.

My dear friend, Kim, stopped in, too, and enjoyed being a kid with a sketchbook for awhile.

Look at these detailed drawings with delicate shading. Good eye!

Campers can get comfy however they choose to create.

Soon it was time to wrap things up for the day. Piper eagerly showed me the cool library downstairs with colorful places to read and dream.

Stephanie called everyone into a closing circle to share anything about their day. She has created and fostered a beautiful hive with patience and compassion.

And this is how I’ve drawn her, a queen bee of book love.

Many thanks to the Merry Barn for a warm welcome. May all who find a haven there keep up their passion for making stories!
