I inexplicably missed the last couple of Maine Comic Arts Festivals, for shame! But the fog lifting over Portland pulled me right in this year.
It’s important to check out the local peeps first. Here is the inimitable Fulton Beal, wacky dad and crazy cartoonist.
Former MECA peeps here, Meagan Gibson and Declan McCarthy:
Something about Murilo Martins book, I’m A German Shepherd looked familiar.
When I found out he was from Brazil, I gave him one of my PDX zines, about the Other Portland.
Lo and behold, he was at ICON8, too! Funny how tight the circle of illustration/zines/comics can be.
I adored this Wonder Girl named Marike, who likes to draw.
For my Sketchbook Project 2015, Wonder Woman made an accidental upside down appearance.
Another MECA alum, Kori Handwerker, graciously visited my class to review portfolios in April. Her Prince of Cats No. 6 is her best yet.
More MECA representing! Great to see my former illustration student, Elise Smorczewski alongside New Media wiz Alec Adams and Megan Turner.
A nice surprise to see the freshly graduated Taylor Grant sharing her thesis project, Loser Quest, while fellow MECA faculty Michael Connor fends off the paparazzi in the background.
I was trying to buy a comic from this guy, but he was busy praising her awesomeness, and offering sage advice: don’t do it for the money!
Thanks for the trade, Nick. Love my Rubbernecker #6!
My companion in comics collecting got into line for local hero, Jay Piscopo.
She at least had her Shutterbug Follies to keep her occupied.
I worshiped near Kochalkaland for a moment before dashing out the door.
Thanks, MECAF, for another great haul!
