I was commissioned by the Peaks Island Elementary School’s PTO to create a piece for Gayl Vail, retiring after 30 years of teaching, promoting literacy, and fostering good will and excellence at Portland’s oldest school. It probably comes as no surprise that boats keep showing up in my work. This piece is currently at the Gem Gallery in the front room exhibit of the members’ collective. I have drawn this boat several times. Just love the color and shape. Even illustrations seem to feature boats pretty often. This was an unused cover for last year’s Cast Off bookjacket. Peg knit the boat piece for me, since I don’t knit. Had fun drawing lots of yarnish things, though. These are the days I wish I could bottle. May is a favorite month for many reasons: On the island, it is still nippy. You’ll need a fleece vest in the morning. It is the time before mosquitos and swarms of SUVs from other places. We have what is called a winter waterview, in that from the pantry door, I can see a slice of the ocean and guess the tides. I bring plenty of pockets and an open mind on the daily ventures to the shore that stretches from Trefethen Landing to City Point.
