color of peaks
Tonight is the 9th annual Color of Peaks show at the TEIA. I’ve been part of every one of them. The club, as it’s known, is a daily sight in my travels with the dog. I did this pastel of the building, built in 1912, several years ago. On Tuesday I was rehearsing my presentation for a talk at the TEIA, Island Inspirations, when Daisy walked through. She remains my muse, only taller. A lot taller. I’m better known on the island as “Daisy’s mom” which suits me just fine. I’m grateful to the entire island community that sustains me and endlessly sparks...

When people ask where I get my ideas, I have to say, “walking my dog.” In any kind of weather, and we have all kinds in Maine, I trot around the island, things popping into my head. I’m also noticing things, large and small, and as my dad used to say, “getting the stink blown off.” Posie is my witness. Sometimes my daughter goes along and we take turns documenting. If it’s low tide, we go to the beach. If it’s high tide, we head to the woods. Trees show themselves and we listen. There comes a deep awareness after a storm. On a hot day, a tidepool...

The Trefethen Evergreen Improvement Association, otherwise known as “the club”, was the venue last Friday night for the sixth annual Color of Peaks art show. The TEIA is better known as the sailing and tennis spot, but once a year invites island artists to exhibit, while taking a portion of sales towards scholarships for island children to participate in club camps. The sight of the little sailboats bobbing about is a seasonal cue; summer has begun. I worked on five new pastels for the show. This one, titled “Late Boat” went to a couple with fond memories of a...

I am working on pastels for next week’s Color of Peaks show at the www.teiaclub.org, really the best spot on the island: wrap-around porch overlooking the bay dotted with boats. Heavenly. I wish everyone a safe and happy Fourth of July with lots of sunshine and the breeze at your...

The daisies are in bloom, along with my daughter, who took this photo en route to my nephew’s high school graduation. Tis the season of culminating events, completion, honors and awards. I was commissioned by the Peaks Island Elementary School’s PTO to create a piece for Gayl Vail, retiring after 30 years of teaching, promoting literacy, and fostering good will and excellence at Portland’s oldest school. Guided by fellow staffer and cousin Kathy Newell, I drew a portrait of the family’s summer cottage. Named the Marion, it is an antique dwelling typical of Peaks...

I worked on some wee little pastels for the new group show, “Thaw”, at the Gem Gallery. I found this rough sketch in one of my sketchbooks, thinking it would be an idea to pursue. Then I morphed it into an absurd image of synchronized skaters on thin ice. There was an event locally of the national synchronized skating association. I didn’t go, but couldn’t ignore the media around it. At any rate, I lost interest in the pastel. I only had small frames and little time in which to do something so detailed. I returned my attention to nature instead. I’m all done...
