Hear them roar! The Maine College of Art illustration seniors are poised to graduate. It’s been a privilege to work with this spirited group during their final semester. Hannah Rosengren’s poster above doubled also as a promotional postcard, handed out at the recent Portfolio Reviews I coordinated as a culmination of their labors. Many thanks to the talented Greta Rybus for these photos. Here Hannah meets with Chief Creative Officer Larry Vine at Garrand. Peter Rimkunas shares a laugh with Chris Hadden of Hadden Design. Megan McConagha of 360 Uncoated meets with Gaella Materne....

fashion buzz at MECA

Maine College of Art’s first fashion show, Maine: Four Seasons in a Day, proved what kind of hive that school truly is. Cross-pollination was visible at it’s best, with creative efforts from students in the new Textile + Fashion Design department, Jewelry and Metalsmithing, Furniture + Woodworking, Graphic Design, Sculpture and Printmaking. The sold-out production was fabulous, and inspired a few fashion drawings, such as the  above, my take on the electrical dress by Allen West, ’10. Woodworking + Furniture alum, Ollie Percival, is now a tech assistant in Textiles +...

spring rites

It’s been an eventful spring break. I have eggs and peeps on the brain, which may explain this drawing of Maine College of Art student Molly Steinmetz. She’s a maker and shaker that needed to be drawn, and with tulips no less. In between lots of walks and sorting out tax stuff, I read Here Come the Humpbacks! at a Peaks Island benefit for our fiercely independent local bookstore, Longfellow Books, which suffered major damages to their store during a February storm. We showed them some love. Thanks to Eleanor Morse for pulling it together and Scott Nash for the design below. What...

happy new year

I’m very fond of the Chinese New Year. As a former resident of San Francisco, I relate to all the Asian wisdom and ritual around new beginnings. And, it’s nice to have another fresh start, since the calendar new year seems to come too close behind the holidays for a truly clean slate. However, I am NOT fond of snakes. In fact, I am totally phobic! I repurposed my illustration of a snake from Nest, Nook & Cranny by Susan Blackaby for a New Year’s card for my SF neighbor, Frank Ching. I guess the snake is all about transforming with ease, so I will embrace my fears,...

My Maine College of Art senior illustration students recently blasted to Boston, with department chair Scott Nash at the helm of our rocket ship. Our first landing was Cloud Kid, where we received warm and furry greetings. Creative Director Dave Schlafman gave an engaging talk about their work, specific projects underway, and a tour of the lively studio. It’s true, every member of his team has their head in the clouds! We loved the murals.. and the toy collections.. Thanks to Cloud Kid for sharing their professional wisdom and awesomeness. The glimpse of real-life creativity totally...

plunge into the new

2013 is off to a brave and busy beginning, full of stories, students, and creatures with white fur. Charlesbridge donated a stack of books for the Natural Resources Council of Maine’s Polar Dip and Dash on the last day of 2012. Sunny but cold, it was a glorious day to sign books about climate change for the top ten kid winners. There was a great crowd, including a polar bear looking a bit out of his element, a fitting metaphor for the whole deal.   Wait, what’s the bride doing here? Oh, it’s Beth Dimond, Public Affairs Coordinator for the NRCM, who decided to take the...
