mother’s tale

Posted by on May 17, 2013 in Book: Here Come the Humpbacks | 0 comments

I received the sweetest Mother’s Day card from my daughter, this watercolor of a humpback floating among flower petals. She knows as well as anybody I have whales on the brain. We were in Boston for my nephew’s graduation, and shared delicious time with family. A little rain didn’t dampen our spirits in the least. Let a smile be your umbrella. Before leaving town, the sun came out. Boston can be so pretty. My daughter also took some lovely photos in the Public Gardens. Upon returning home, it was back to the drawing table, working on a migration game for my upcoming book...

First Friday fun

Posted by on May 3, 2013 in Comics, Maine College of Art | 1 comment

First Fridays are always packed in Portland, and tonight’s will be even more so, thanks to daffodils, sunshine, and Mainers crawling out from under their rocks. I was invited by Pinecone & Chickadee to be in their Matryoshka Art Show. Of course I said, yes: love that place! But actually, it was a stretch for me to paint, and to paint on something curved. Egads. I lined up the blanks and looked at them for way too long, 5 in all and some pretty tiny. I knew right away I wanted to do a series of female superheroes. Had to narrow down my list, but then I drew over the photo for...

Hear them roar! The Maine College of Art illustration seniors are poised to graduate. It’s been a privilege to work with this spirited group during their final semester. Hannah Rosengren’s poster above doubled also as a promotional postcard, handed out at the recent Portfolio Reviews I coordinated as a culmination of their labors. Many thanks to the talented Greta Rybus for these photos. Here Hannah meets with Chief Creative Officer Larry Vine at Garrand. Peter Rimkunas shares a laugh with Chris Hadden of Hadden Design. Megan McConagha of 360 Uncoated meets with Gaella Materne....

fashion buzz at MECA

Maine College of Art’s first fashion show, Maine: Four Seasons in a Day, proved what kind of hive that school truly is. Cross-pollination was visible at it’s best, with creative efforts from students in the new Textile + Fashion Design department, Jewelry and Metalsmithing, Furniture + Woodworking, Graphic Design, Sculpture and Printmaking. The sold-out production was fabulous, and inspired a few fashion drawings, such as theĀ  above, my take on the electrical dress by Allen West, ’10. Woodworking + Furniture alum, Ollie Percival, is now a tech assistant in Textiles +...

howdy do Austin

Posted by on Apr 18, 2013 in Travels | 2 comments

We’re back from a too short but truly sweet trip to Austin, capitol of the Lone Star state. My head is spinning with the glory of it all. After an unexpected delay that detoured us through Dallas, we landed wearily into the open arms of our cowgirl hostess, Katherine Mahoney, who brought us over to Tesoros Trading Company, a feast for sore eyes. We faithfully bowed in reverence to a bounty of folk treasures, blessed by our safe arrival. Everything along South Congress Street called to us, from catchy sandwich boards to vintage signage and wheels. We needed more than a visual...

hair there

Posted by on Apr 10, 2013 in Illustration | 1 comment

I recently made a fun departure into celebrity portraits, for a potential wall mural for a hair salon. They asked for portraits of people with iconic hair that defined their era. I love doing visual anthropology, searching for image files, seeing a person’s lifetime at a glance within my tattered clipping files or on Bing. Here are some of my sketches, see if you recognize them. First person to name all 6 correctly wins a print of their...
